Med. Toki Pounamu - Raperape
Toki / Adzes are a significant tool from many cultures around the World.
Māori have used Toki for hundreds of years - often crafted from Pounamu because of its inherent strength in the layering of the Jade. Toki have also been found to have been made from other stones such as Onewa / Greywacke, Pākohe / Argillite, and even Andesite. Additionally, Toki have been made from the shell of the Giant Clam, as well as from iron that would have been traded with the first European Settlers.
Toki were used as tools in a range of ways - from felling trees, to hulling Waka, to Shaping Poupou and elements of a Whare, to even more intricate workings of Māori Art.
The Toki is a great gift for the craftsperson in your life.
This Toki features the Whakairo surface pattern 'Raperape' (Ra-pe-ra-pe) and Koru - which can symbolize a number of things, including balance, growth, and duality.
