Hei Tiki - Medium-Large

$3,500.00

Hei Tiki are an enduring Taonga within Māoridom.

They have come to symbolize many things, such as fertility and pregnancy, and other elements of child-rearing. Hei Tiki have travelled down generation to generation - with kaitiaki (guardians) of the present day, looking after Hei Tiki hundreds of years old.

Historically, Hei Tiki were named - each one having it's own prestige, set-apart by it's name. Historically worn by Tohunga, who were revered for their Spiritual connections and abilities, Hei Tiki have now become more accessible.

It is understood that many Hei Tiki were fashioned from retired Toki Pounamu (Jade Adzes), which is where the thinness in the legs comes from, as well as the beautiful tapering of the body. An important element to note, as we come to understand the importance of Toki to Māori culture, and the creation that took place with that Toki before it became a Hei Tiki.

In present day, many carvers create Hei Tiki in their own style - some carve the Tiki itself wearing adornments, or holding weapons or implements, while others adorn their Tiki with whakarei / surface patterning. There are many carvers out there creating beautiful Hei Tiki - find the right style for you!

The Hei Tiki is a perfect gift for someone that you hold in high-regard. Someone with a mind for the future, that cares for others, and cares about legacy. Regarding the transformation of the Hei Tiki from the Working Toki - this Taonga / Treasure could be a great gift for someone who has made a shift in their life that you want to solidify as a milestone for them.
