Notched Manaia - Inanga Pounamu
This Taonga is based on the form of a 'Manaia'. Manaia are historically understood as Kaitiaki / Guardians - and can be carved in a number of different forms, including (but not limited to) Bugs, Birds, Lizards, and more.
This Manaia is carved from a very nice piece of Pounamu/Jade called 'Inanga', which gets it's name from the Whitebait swimming here in Aotearoa NZ.
This is a slightly smaller piece, featuring bevelled notches on one side, and clean negatives. This piece might suit the more artsy person in your life?
NB:- Inanga is a reasonably challenging variety of Pounamu to capture the colour of accurately. The photos of it outside in the Sun are the best reflection of its colouring. It is also a very translucent variety of Pounamu.
