This Taonga is a Pekapeka - an older style piece, made contemporary - honouring the Pekapeka - our Bat!
Pekapeka is the Māori word for 'Bat', and fun fact, the 2x species of Bat that exist in Aotearoa are our only native land mammal.
Pekapeka are fantastic Taonga - being not only symmetrical, but also double sided! One understanding is that this dual symmetry mirrors the nature of our native bats themselves.
The stone used for this Taonga is a lovely slice of Golden Pounamu, from here in Aotearoa.
