The Matau is a fish-hook. Some Matau were functional in form and others, like this one, were designed to be ceremonial / ornamental.

The Matau is hands-down, my favourite form to carve - the bevels, curves, tapers, and balance all add to the phenomenal aesthetic.

This Matau is made from a beautiful piece of Kawakawa Pounamu from Aotearoa, and features intricate beveled notching around the entire piece.
It is based on a very old style of Matau held in the archives of one of Aotearoa's leading Museums.
