The Matau is a fish-hook.
Some Matau were functional in form and others, like this one, were designed to be ceremonial / ornamental.
The Matau is hands-down my favourite form to carve - the bevels, curves, tapers, and balance all add to the phenomenal aesthetic.
This Matau is made from a very interesting piece of Dinosaur Bone - also known as Gembone, or Agataized Gembone. Given the very porous nature of many dinosaur bones, and how long they have been fossilized for, sometimes Agate has formed in the pores on the inside of the bone - this is where we can see the change in colour happening.
This bone is understood to have come from a Brontosaurus. More information can be provided on request.
