The Matau is a fish-hook.
Some Matau were functional in form and others, like this one, were designed to be ceremonial / ornamental.
The Matau is hands-down my favourite form to carve - the bevels, curves, tapers, and balance all add to the phenomenal aesthetic.
This Matau is made from an exquisite piece of Pounamu and features intricate beveled notching around the entire Taonga.
This Taonga also features a small Pāua inlay, hidden in the barb, near the binding.
