Kapeu

This Taonga is called a 'Kapeu' - These are very old forms - even pre-dating European Contact in Aotearoa, NZ.

The Kapeu is a great gift for any Mother, Mother-to-be, or even anyone in a symbolically Mother-like role in your life. This is because Kapeu are understood as our traditional Māori 'teethers'.

The Kapeu's shape is a beautiful, yet versatile one. The gentle curve allows for a baby to use it as a pacifier, whilst also allowing the caregiver to retrieve food from the baby's mouth (or anything that it has decided to put in it's mouth!)

Other uses have included the aide in teething - through cutting the gums, and milk-expression, when necessary.

The Kapeu is one of many customary forms that seem simple in design, but can actually be quite tricky to really get right.
