Pūngāwerewere - Spider Web Pendant
This Taonga is a display of the Whakairo pattern 'Pūngāwerewere'. This pattern is symbolic of a Spider's Web, and is largely associated with the Rongowhakaata Tribe, from the East Coast of Aotearoa, NZ.
The spider web is a beautiful house, crafted intricately, and deliberately by the Spider. This Taonga would be a fitting gift for the person that is deliberate and diligent in their mahi/work. Someone once told me that if you break a spider's web, it will make it exactly the same as is was before - I don't know if that was true, but it was cool to think about as a 6 year old kid.
This pattern is quite similar to the patterns of Ritorito, Pūwerewere, and Waewae Pākura - though there are variations, and each Tribal Style differs from the next.
This Taonga is made from a lovely piece of South Westland Pounamu / Jade, from here in Aotearoa.
